Seylan Bank receives the Vel Chariot during Adi Vel Festival

The Adi Vel Festival, a ceremony revered by the Hindu devotees in Colombo is an annual religious observance which coincides with the Annual Kataragama Festival.

This year the senior management and staff of Seylan Bank lead by Director and CEO of Seylan Bank Kapila Ariyaratne ceremoniously received the Vel Chariot as it made its way past the Seylan Bank Head Office.

A ritual that dates back to the 19th century, Vel procession was introduced to Sri Lanka by the Chettiar community (businessmen from Chettinad, India). Each year a heavily decorated chariot bedecked by the statue of the deity Skanda parades the streets of Colombo over a period of four days invoking blessings to the devotees. The procession is considered to be a minor replica of the 14 day procession that takes place in Kataragama.
